Ever since he’d been left alone, Grandpa Carlo spent a lot of time in his armchair, flipping through the newspaper in search of something smaller and more suitable for him. As soon as he got home, he did a search on his computer, and when he found the house in Mezzolombardo—an entire southwestern-facing property spread over four floors—he began to imagine how that house could become the family’s new gathering place.
On the lower floor, there was a living room with a small balcony, a windowless bathroom with a shower, and a master bedroom lit by two large windows: an ideal space to allow his grandfather to live comfortably and maintain his independence, yet close enough that he wouldn’t feel lonely.

There was also a garage—a spacious area on the ground floor with access from the main street. It used to be a workshop, and in the future, in addition to a car, motorcycle, and bicycle, it could serve as a space where Dad could indulge his creative hobbies.
But it was the attic that sparked the biggest idea. Matteo imagined that fourth floor transformed into useful spaces for the whole family: Mom could set up a quiet study to work in, while Sara would finally have a place to study and hang out with her friends without having to share a room with her little brother anymore.
Matteo shared the idea with the whole family over dinner, and what at first seemed like just a house found in the classifieds began to take shape as a project.
